Gluteal Augmentation

Gluteal augmentation is an outpatient procedure that can define and shape,and/or increase the size of the buttock area. The augmentation can be done with a solid silicone implant, or by autologous fat transfer. This procedure is done under general or epidural anesthesia.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The incision is done vertically in-between the buttock cheeks. For gluteal augmentation with an implant, a pocket is created between the gluteus maximus muscle superficially, and gluteus medius and minimus muscles deeply. This allows for the implant to stay snugly and safely in place. Dissolvable and/or Nylon sutures will close the incision site.

For a gluteal augmentation by autologous fat transfer, an area such as the abdomen, back, hips, or thighs, is liposuctioned and the fat washed and transferred to the gluteal area. It is injected with a syringe into the gluteal muscles. As the target areas are being injected, our board certified plastic surgeons at North Valley Plastic Surgery can shape and contour the buttocks. The muscle will then retain and nourish the fat. Because the fat is coming from the same person, there is no risk of the body rejecting the fat.

What to Expect During the Recovery Period

Following a gluteal augmentation, there is no limitation to sitting down, and one can sleep on his/her back. If Nylon sutures were used, they will be removed within two weeks. A compression garment is worn to help reduce the swelling and protect the buttocks during the healing period.

Restrictions over the next six weeks may include but are not limited to: heavy lifting, pulling, or pushing. It will take several weeks for the swelling and bruising to dissipate.

The use of bath tubs, Jacuzzis, or anything that allows the body to submerge is not allowed, until clearance from the physician has been provided (usually three weeks after the surgery). Showering is allowed 48 hours after surgery. It is important to pat the operative areas dry and replace the dressings.
