Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation is a procedure(s) that can combine labiaplasty and vaginoplasty. This procedure will improve the appearance of the external female genitalia (labiaplasty), as well as tighten the vagina muscles (vaginoplasty). This is an outpatient procedure that is done under general anesthesia.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty, also known as a labia reduction, labia rejuvenation, or vaginal lip reduction, will fix the disproportionate size of the labia minora (inner labia) and/or the labia majora.

There are two main reasons women choose to undergo this procedure: discomfort and aesthetics. Women often report difficulty with hygiene, discomfort with tight clothing, pain when exercising, labia catching in zippers, and/or painful intercourse due to the enlargement of the labia minora. Women may also experience spraying at urination, and recurring urinary tract infections. If these functional problems do occur, then labiaplasty can be covered by one’s health insurance in many cases.

What is Vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty is a procedure that will tighten the vagina muscles. This is achieved by removing excessive vaginal lining posteriorly (towards the back), and tightening the surrounding soft tissues and muscles.

This procedure can be done on women who have and have not undergone child birth.

What to Expect During the Procedure

After child birth, tissue has thinned out and will need to be reattached. The incision is located in the inner labia majora. Supportive sutures, that are dissolvable, are placed underneath the skin layer. This will pull the muscles together, and create a supportive pad of tissue. The board certified gynecologist or plastic surgeon at North Valley Plastic Surgery, will close the incision site with dissolvable sutures.

What to Expect During the Recovery Period

Post-operatively, there will be discomfort at the surgical site for the first few days.

Over the next four weeks it is important to avoid the use of tampons, tight clothing, thong underwear, and sexual intercourse. This will allow for adequate healing of the incision site.

Full healing will take approximately six weeks. The use of bath tubs, Jacuzzis, or anything that allows the body to submerge is not allowed, until clearance from the physician has been provided (usually three weeks after the surgery). Showering is allowed 48 hours after surgery. It is important to pat the operative areas dry and replace the dressings.
