Areola Reconstruction Phoenix
Breast Augmentation AZ
Reconstruction Solely by Micropigment Application (tattooing)
Areola reconstruction uses permanent makeup to recreate an areola for breast cancer patients during an emotional time. The procedure can be done to correct irregular shape, add color, as well as create a natural appearance for those who have undergone areola removal or areolar loss.
The consultation is complimentary with our licensed paramedical aesthetician, here at North Valley Plastic Surgery. The visit includes: color and size matching, answering all questions, and scheduling the treatment.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The procedure begins with creating the shape, and size, along with the discussion of the colors.
A topical anesthetic is used on the area being treated. This allows for more comfort while the procedure is being performed.
A micropigmentation machine is used for areolar reconstruction. This is the same procedure used when applying permanent makeup.
What to Expect During the Recovery Period
Following the procedure, the area will be swollen and tender to the touch, for the next 24 – 72 hours.
Over the next five days a topical A&D ointment is applied to assist with the healing process.
One must avoid the use of Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, sitting in a Jacuzzi, or swimming for one week.
For patients who have lost their breasts to mastectomy, the nipples and areolae can be reconstructed surgically. While there are several techniques for surgical nipple reconstruction, the most common technique employed is that of the “skate flap.”
In the skate flap procedure the nipple will be reconstructed using skin on the reconstructed breast to make a papule that projects forward from the breast much like a nipple. Once the papule has been reconstructed, the areolar is then reconstructed using a full thickness skin graft harvested from elsewhere on the body, most commonly from the groin crease. A bolster dressing is applied, securing the areolar graft in place, and protecting the nipple for four to six days after surgery. After the bolster dressing is removed, a protective dressing is used for two more weeks while the reconstructed nipple and areola mature in position. Color can be added to the reconstructed nipple and areolar using the micropigmentation techniques explained above.
Surgical nipple areolar reconstruction is done as an outpatient procedure.
