What’s the 411 on the new 410 Breast Implant?
North Valley Plastic Surgery is one of the first offices in the country to carry the Allergan Natrelle™ 410 Silicone Breast Implants. This new implant was recently approved by the FDA after an extensive FDA-sanctioned study. Despite the media’s interest in gummy bear implants, they are not for every patient.
“In fact,” says Dr. Ryan Tsujimura, a breast surgeon in Scottsdale, “although any patient can [have gummy bear implants] only about 15% of my patients are ideal candidates. The patient has to be the right age, desire a more natural look without upper fullness, and preferably not have had any breast implants before.”
Gummy bear implants have some differences that you and your doctor should be aware of. Because the implant is firmer, it will require a larger surgical incision than saline or silicone implants. Most patients never notice a healed incision mark from breast implants because it is on a crease in the fold of the breast. Gummy bear implants can develop a crack in the gel. While no patients were adversely affected by gel crack in clinical studies, the post-approval studies will investigate this further.
The Natrelle® 410 gummy bear implant comes in twelve different sizes for different body types. They are approved for breast augmentation in women age 22 or older and for breast reconstruction in women. More studies will be done before they are regarded as an option for revision surgeries, which correct or improve the result of an original surgery. The placement of the implant on a shaped implant like the gummy bear is critical. To help your surgeon during surgery the implant has several orientation marks on the implant. To prevent movement of the implant, its outside surface is textured.
What makes them a “Gummy Bear” Implant?
“Gummy bear” is nothing more than a marketing term for the firm yet pliable candy like consistency of the cohesive silicone gel. Most silicone breast implants have a silicone gel that feels like hair gel, while the 410 is even more cohesive, or firmer.
The current silicone gel implants, which have a round shape, are made up of silicone that has a consistency like hair gel. Like your natural breast tissue, the gel in the implant responds to gravity during body motion. So when the implant is in the vertical position, the gel in the implant flows to the bottom and top of the implant contracts. This leads to loss of upper fullness which may be visible or felt.
The gummy bear style 410 implant is made with silicone that has 3% more cross-linking making it much more rigid. The silicone in the gummy bear implant does deviate from its anatomic (tear-drop) shape in any position. Women that prefer the tear-drop shape of natural breasts appreciate this look. Women having breast reconstruction after breast cancer and women that want a subtle, natural breast shape will opt for the gummy bear implants. Women that want the look of push up bra cleavage that upper fullness provides, should opt for silicone or saline gel implants and not have the gummy bear implants. Once a patient has been measured and deemed an appropriate candidate, it is a matter of your personal preference for size and shape.
Your Gummy Bear Implants Consultation
Most patients find their breast augmentation consultation at North Valley Plastic surgery fun and informative. You are welcome to bring a guest and touch and feel the different implants on the market. Our fitting bra can estimate how different shapes and sizes of implants might look after your procedure. During the initial consultation, we will take precise measurements of your body to determine the ideal width of the implant that your body can accept. One of the most essential measurements to determine a breast implant is base width. The height and projection are also factors in determining the correct implant for your body and goals.
A detailed medical history is reviewed by the doctor before he or she recommends the type of implant for your body. Of course, your input, goals, and sometimes budget are all important considerations for the doctor’s implant choice. During your consultation, you will meet with the cosmetic coordinator, nursing staff, and the board certified plastic surgeon that will be performing your surgery.
