Breast Lift
Breast lifts (Mastopexy) are done in order to restore youthfulness to sagging breasts. Due to gravity and aging, the breasts lose their elasticity and the fat begins to atrophy. When the areola droops down near to or below the breast fold, it is called Breast Ptosis. Breast lifts can be done as its own procedure; but, mastopexy can also be combined with other procedures including but not limited to: breast augmentations and breast reductions.
There are four techniques of the breast lift: Crescent Mastopexy, Benelli Mastopexy, Vertical Mastopexy, and Full Anchor Mastopexy. The difference between the four techniques is the type of incision made, and the severity of the lift required.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The Crescent Mastopexy is for minor ptosis. The incision is a crescent shape done above the areola where any excessive skin is removed.
The Benelli Mastopexy, also known as circumareolar lift, uses an incision that removes the skin and tissue around the areola. This technique allows for the scaring to be camouflaged, because it is around the areola.
The Vertical Mastopexy is similar to the Benelli technique, except the ptosis is a bit more severe; but is not drastic enough to require the Full Anchor Mastopexy. Sometimes called the “lollipop lift,” the scars are around the areola and straight down towards the inframammary crease.
The final technique is the Full Anchor Mastopexy, which is the most commonly used type of mastopexy. The incision is shaped like an anchor, including one around the areola, a scar underneath in the inframammary crease, and a scar from the areola to the inframammary crease.
Regardless of the technique used, the surgical site will be closed mostly with dissolving sutures. There will be a few “key sutures” (nylon) that will need to be removed.

Breast Lifts are often combined with other procedures like a breast augmentation or Breast Reduction to achieve the desired results. In some cases, the augmentation helps in stretching the skin so you may achieve a breast lift with shorter scars. Many patients require a breast reduction as well as a breast lift to get the result they are looking for. Below is a list of the standard mastopexy techniques.

Over time, a woman’s breasts begin to sag and the areolas become larger. All surgery carries some uncertainty and risk.

Incisions outline the area of skin to be removed and the new position for the nipple.

Skin formerly located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Sutures close the incisions, giving the breast its new contour.

After surgery, the breasts are higher and firmer, with sutures usually located around the areola, below it, and in the crease under the breast.

If your expectations are realistic, chances are you’ll be satisfied with your breast lift.
What to Expect During the Recovery Period
It is important not to shower for the first 48 hours. The use of bath tubs, Jacuzzis, or anything that allows the body to submerge is not allowed, until clearance from the physician has been provided.
Post-operatively, a zip-up sports bra is optimal because it helps protect the breasts and provides support after a lift. Depending upon the surgeon, nylon sutures may or may not be used. If there are nylon sutures, they will be removed two weeks after surgery. The breasts will be bruised and swollen and can take up to six weeks to subside.
