Breast
Augmentation

Breast Augmentation, medically known as
Augmentation Mammoplasty, is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic
surgical procedures performed in the United States today. Breast
augmentation is desired by many women for a number of reasons:
- To enhance the breast size of a woman
who feels her breasts are too small
-
To correct a reduction in breast volume
after pregnancy
- To balance a
difference in breast size
- For
Reconstruction after Breast Surgery
The Procedure:
Breast augmentation is performed on an
outpatient basis using general anesthesia. The surgery takes approx.
2 hours. Incisions will be made to allow the surgeon to position the
implant properly. the traditional locations for the incisions you
will see in the figure below. -
Below the breast
-
Under the arm
-
Along the lower portion of the areola

Once the incision has been made, a pocket will
be created either under the breast tissue (subglandular) or under the
chest wall muscle (subpectoral).

The implant is then securely positioned in the
pocket, filled to the desired size and small sutures are used to close the
incision.

Recovery
You're likely to feel tired and sore for a few
days following your surgery, but you'll be up and around in 24 to 48
hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by prescribed medication.
We routinely prescribe a sleeping aid and antinausea medications. You
should take it as directed by our staff. You may also experience a burning
sensation in your nipples for about two weeks, but this will subside as
bruising fades. Your stitches will come out in a week to 10 days, but the
swelling in your breasts may take three to five weeks to disappear.
