Chin Implants Phoenix
Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty, is a procedure where a chin implant is positioned to enhance and/or correct a receding or under-developed chin. The implants can change the contour of the chin, and create a “cleft” if needed.
Genioplasty was originally done by cutting the bone, moving it into a new position, and keeping it in position with small plates and screws.
Today, with the quality of implants, this procedure is rarely necessary. This procedure is done on an outpatient basis, under twilight or general anesthesia.
Chin implants come in varying sizes and shapes. Our board certified plastic surgeons at North Valley Plastic Surgery will help choose the proper implant for your own particular needs.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The incision is done underneath the chin (submental), or it can go through the inside of the mouth, (buccal sulcus). Then, a solid silicone implant is placed in the chin area.
Depending upon the surgeon at North Valley Plastic Surgeon Nylon sutures will be used in the skin. Dissolving sutures are used in the deeper layers. The Nylon sutures will have to be removed.
Often times, genioplasty is done in conjunction with liposuction for a more defined look. In this instance, a compression garment is necessary to protect the area during the recovery process.
What to Expect During the Recovery Period
It is important to sleep with the head elevated for at least two weeks. A chin strap is provided, and must be worn for one to four weeks, depending on the surgeon. The Nylon sutures will be removed five to seven days post-operatively. The area will be swollen and should gradually subside over 4-6 weeks.
