Facial Implants Phoenix
Facial implants are used to enhance the contours of one’s face. There are five different types of facial implants: chin, malar, submalar, nasal, and lateral mandibular angle. All facial implants are done as an outpatient procedure, under general or twilight anesthesia.
Specific risks associated with these surgical procedures include temporary or permanent local facial paralysis due to bruising or injuries to the facial motor nerves. Numbness can occur for the same reasons involving the sensory nerves. Fortunately, these complications are very uncommon.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The various facial implants come in different sizes, and our board certified plastic surgeons here at North Valley Plastic Surgery can trim the implants for a customized look to suit any patient’s particular needs. Most implants are made of a rubbery silastic material that feels very much like the consistency of the cartilage one would find in a chicken breast. They are somewhat soft, and they do retain their shape. Facial implants made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are used in certain cases, most commonly for dorsal nasal augmentation.
The incision for the malar, also known as the cheeks, and submalar implants, (the dimpled areas beneath the cheek bone prominences), is made through the sulcus, or the inside of the upper gum line. The incisions are usually made above the canine teeth. In many cases, chin, malar, and submental implants are secured in place with a small titanium micro-screw.
The incision for the lateral mandibular angle, also known as the jawline, is done on the inside of the lower gum line.
What to Expect During the Recovery Period
Post-operatively it is important to sleep with the head elevated for the next two weeks. At North Valley Plastic Surgery, we instruct our patient’s to use ice packs or frozen peas to keep swelling under control. The majority of swelling will have resolved within 10-14 days. The last 10-20% of swelling will subside within six weeks in most patients.
