Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a treatment that will provide a lasting solution for unwanted hair. Great for legs, ears, bikini line and pubic hair removal.

Laser hair removal is a treatment that will provide a lasting solution for unwanted hair (hair removal, laser hair removal, pubic hair removal). The device uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to target the hair follicles. This powerful beam of light is attracted to the melanin production, and to the blood vessels, in the hair follicles; so, depilatories should not be used.

Hair grows in three phases: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. The Anagen phase is when the hair follicle is active and growing. In this stage, the hair follicle can be found by the laser, and destroyed. When the hair is in the Telogen, or resting phase, it is inactive, and cannot be found.

The area being treated cannot be tanned, because the laser will heat up the tan pigment as opposed to the hair follicle and may burn the skin. The laser will not be effective on blond, grey, or red hair.

Areas that can be treated include:

  • Arms
  • Back of Neck/Front of Neck
  • Back
  • Beard Area
  • Bikini/Bikini Plus/Brazilian
  • Cheeks
  • Chest/Shoulders
  • Chin
  • Ears
  • Full Face
  • Hands
  • Legs
  • Nose
  • Stomach
  • Underarm
  • Upper Lip

For optimal results, laser hair removal treatments are recommended at four week intervals. Depending on the outcome and expectation, five treatments are recommended, along with ongoing maintenance, to continue results. Our licensed paramedical aestheticians here at North Valley Plastic Surgery will provide you with detailed information to best suite your needs.

What to Expect During the Procedure

We ask that you come for your visit with the area that we are going to treat already shaved. Once the skin is cleansed, a light layer of gel is applied. The gel will be cool, and will allow the handpiece to glide across the skin. Laser goggles will be worn to block the light. The handpiece will slowly heat up the skin, while targeting the pigment and the blood vessels in the hair follicle, and destroying it.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Following the treatment, the skin will be slightly red. It is possible that there will be hair lying on the surface of the skin. It is important to remember that the area was shaved, so hair will remain in the follicle. The treatment will shock the hair follicle, causing it to “jump” out. This is normal, and the intended result. It is acceptable to continue to shave the area. After a few weeks, you will notice that the area has less hair, and you might be shaving less often.

There is no downtime with laser hair removal. Depending on the location of the hair removal, sunscreen should be worn because you will be sensitive to the sun following the treatment. Remember, Laser hair removal is a treatment that will provide a lasting solution for unwanted hair. Great for legs, ears, bikini line and pubic hair removal.
