Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a treatment wherein we inject hypertonic saline solution into spider veins, causing them to collapse. This treatment is good for tiny purple and red blood vessels. Varicose veins are larger and tend to be a bluish color, but can also be treated. Frequently, sclerotherapy is combined with laser vein treatments to achieve the best possible result.

What to Expect During the Procedure

You will lie down, and the area will be cleansed. Next, the solution will slowly be injected directly into your spider veins. There is a mild burning sensation that dissipates very quickly. As the solution goes in, the vein will blanch, or turn white. Once it is white, it will steadily disappear. When the area is finished, pressure will be applied to avoid clotting.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Immediately following the procedure, we will place an ace bandage around the injection sites. This applies pressure, and will help the veins stay compressed. If you own Ted hose, they can replace the ace bandages. On occasion, bruising can occur. Over the next 24 hours, vigorous activity should be avoided; however, walking around is encouraged to avoid clotting.
